MEMORIZING CAN BE TOUGH, AND IT'S NOT YOUR KID'S FAULT OR YOURS.

It's unfair for kids to be expected to memorize all the school-required things with complete ease. 😰 It's unfair that any parent or teacher should carry stress or worry when a kid is struggling to memorize. Here's why. Some required-to-memorize text or lists feel near-impossible to memorize because:

  • they're extremely lengthy
  • they're cumbersome and/or awkwardly phrased
  • they're possibly beyond your kid's understanding at his/her age
  • other factors (like stress, lack of sleep, etc) could be affecting your kid's ability to retain info
  • so many distractions are also vying for your kids' attention to focus
  • students' learning styles differ from kid to kid
  • in some cases, there may be language or speech hurdles involved

These are not your fault, parents and teachers! It's downright wrong for any parent or teacher to feel guilty or disappointed about their kid's memorizing ability.

CUE THE DISCOURAGING VOICE OF THE "PERFECT-PARENT."

When your kid is struggling to memorize, oftentimes the voice of the "Perfect-Parent" complex - that wily, discouraging voice in many of our heads - can whisper in your ears...

  • "Your kid is not smart."
  • "Your kid is falling behind his or her peers."
  • "Your kid will never get it - it's hopeless."
  • "Your kid is struggling because of your failures."
  • "You're not a good parent."
  • "You're not a good teacher."
  • "It's all your fault."

Yeah... been there. The Perfect-Parent complex has been an all-too-familiar voice heckling in the back of the minds of parents for hundreds and hundreds of years. It fills us with self-doubt, anxiety, impatience, stress, frustration, and guilt.

And it can be exhausting to fight back against that discouraging voice when you see your kid:

  • struggling to memorize awkward, cumbersome text or long lists
  • scoring poorly on quizzes, tests, exams and presentations
  • missing deadlines
  • feeling like he or she is such a disappointment

WE GET IT. LIKE, REALLY GET IT.

Like many of you reading this, our family has firsthand experience with the struggles of required memorization in our daughters' educational journey. From math equations to countries and capitals we've didn't even knew existed to famous speeches to grammar facts... you name it, and
it's probably been required for memorization at some point at the Jones house.

And, in the past, that left us feeling quite helpless as to how they were going to accomplish their memorization goals, especially when we were already juggling a hundred other things. Aaarrrggghhh! We needed a solution!

"Homeschooling dad here. I memorized the first 3rd of the song to get a jump start on my kids. They had it down in 3-4 days, totally passed me up as I’m still learning. Great job putting this all together."

TO MEMORIZE BETTER,  WE FIRST NEED TO UNDERSTAND HOW THE BRAIN WORKS

Memory is made up of three “storage” systems in the brain, each playing a unique role:

  1. ENCODING. This first system absorbs information (like song lyrics) and holds it in a short-term storage area.
  2. LONG-TERM MEMORY. This system is a lot like a long-term storage unit. It stores two kinds of memories: episodic (personal memories with associated feelings) and semantic (facts you can remember, like who was the first U.S. President).
  3. RECALL. The third memory system is the recall system, which finds information stored in the first two systems and "pulls it out." If a fact doesn’t pop into your mind in a second or two, you’ll use some kind of recall strategy to find it. That's where I Memorized That™ comes in.

ENTER THE SECRET WEAPON: I MEMORIZED THAT™

I Memorized That™ is all three memory systems fused into one, ultimate SECRET WEAPON of memorization. Tough-to-memorize text and lists and the snide, belittling voice of the Perfect-Parent complex have finally met their match!

When using IMT, your kid won't even realize their three memory systems are literally "firing on all cylinders." Your little genius will be too busy singing at the top of his or her lungs while flawlessly reciting information that would impress neighbors, grandparents and even the grocery store clerk. Yep - you'll have a memorizing wizard on your hands! Meanwhile, YOU will be experiencing:

  • relief from anxiety, frustration, worry and guilt about his or her memory struggles
  • peace of mind and confidence that your genius knows what he or she needs to know
  • pride at his or her accomplishments and growth
  • the reassurance that your kid isn't struggling or "falling behind"
  • the gratification that he or she in stride or even AHEAD of other kids
  • the delight that your little mastermind is expanding his or her knowledge and potential

And when your fellow parents or teachers speak glowingly of your kid with phrases like "So smart!" or "Impressive!" or "Wow - how did he/she memorize all that?!" ... you can simply offer a knowing smile, because YOU understand the secret weapon is doing exactly what it was designed to do.

The best part? Your kid gets to proudly exclaim after every achievement: "I MEMORIZED THAT!"
